Charline McCombs Pollinator Meadow Garden

A Living Legacy: The Charline McCombs Pollinator Meadow Garden

For generations, the McCombs family has believed that building a stronger Texas means investing not only in businesses, but in the institutions and places that enrich people’s lives. That commitment will soon take root in a remarkable new way at the San Antonio Botanical Garden.

The Charline McCombs Pollinator Meadow Garden will transform a sweeping acre of the Botanical Garden into a vibrant landscape of native grasses, wildflowers and flowering plants designed to support butterflies, bees and other essential pollinators.

More than a beautiful addition to one of San Antonio’s treasured cultural institutions, the garden will honor the life and legacy of Charline McCombs and reflect the McCombs family’s longstanding commitment to San Antonio and the natural beauty of Texas.

Charline and Red McCombs shared a deep belief in giving back to the community they called home. Over decades, that philosophy helped support organizations advancing education, healthcare, research, the arts and quality of life throughout Texas. The new Pollinator Meadow Garden extends that legacy to conservation — creating a place that will benefit the community today while helping protect the natural environment for generations to come.

Designed as a living ecosystem rather than a traditional ornamental garden, the meadow will place native Texas plants at the heart of the experience. Visitors will wander through changing displays of wildflowers and grasses while monarchs, swallowtails, native bees and other pollinators move throughout the landscape.

The garden’s beauty will evolve with the seasons. Spring and summer blooms will give way to fall seed heads and the quieter textures of winter, demonstrating that a healthy natural landscape can be beautiful throughout the year.
