McCombs Returns to The Spurs

McCombs Returns to The Spurs Family as Part Owners

Few investments are as closely connected to the McCombs family legacy โ€” or to the identity of San Antonio โ€” as the San Antonio Spurs. That relationship began in 1973, when Red McCombs led the initiative to bring the Dallas Chaparrals to San Antonio. The team was renamed the Spurs, and Red became its first president. What began as a risky business proposition quickly became something much bigger. San Antonio embraced the Spurs with pride and the team grew to become one of professional sports’ most successful franchises, including winning 6 NBA championships. Red’s ownership of the Spurs would span multiple chapters. He sold his interest before acquiring the Denver Nuggets, then returned to the Spurs in the 1980s. He hired Coach Pop. In 1993, he sold the team again, this time to a group of local investors committed to keeping the Spurs in San Antonio. Thirty years later, the story came full circle. In 2023, McCombs Enterprises repurchased an equity interest in the San Antonio Spurs, returning the McCombs family to the ownership group of the franchise Red helped bring to the city 50 years earlier. The NBA Board of Governors approved the investment, with McCombs Enterprises joining the Holt family and other strategic investors. Today, second- and third-generation family members carry forward the legacy Red and Charline began. Reinvesting in the Spurs represents more than an investment in a successful sports franchise. It reflects the McCombs family’s enduring commitment to San Antonio โ€” and a belief that the best investments can create value while strengthening the communities they call home.
