Few places bring together the McCombs family’s history with San Antonio quite like Hemisfair.
Red and Charline McCombs were involved in the community surrounding HemisFair ’68, the transformative world’s fair that introduced a new vision for San Antonio. Just five years later, Red helped bring the Spurs to San Antonio, where the team played its first two decades at HemisFair Arena.
More than 50 years later, those connections have come together again.
The McCombs Foundation and Spurs Give partnered to provide $1.8 million to create the Red McCombs Community Court, a covered, full-size public basketball court in Hemisfair’s Tower Park. Located just steps from where HemisFair Arena once stood, the court opened in September 2025 as the first publicly accessible basketball court in the Hemisfair District.
Designed as a gathering place for youth, families and community groups, the court celebrates both San Antonio’s basketball heritage and its future. Its architecture draws inspiration from HemisFair ’68, while Fiesta colors and a Spurs-McCombs logo at center court connect the space to the city and the team Red helped bring here.
At the dedication, Spurs legends and current players joined members of the McCombs family and local students, followed by a youth basketball clinic that put the court immediately to work for the community.
For the McCombs family, the project is about more than basketball. It reflects Red and Charline’s lifelong belief in using their resources and relationships to strengthen their community — a philosophy Red often expressed simply: “work to make a difference.”
The Red McCombs Community Court brings that legacy full circle: a community investment at Hemisfair, alongside the Spurs, in the very place where so much of the McCombs family’s history with San Antonio began.
