Red & Charline McCombs

Red McCombs left an outsized legacy on the state he loved. Best known for bringing the SPURS to San Antonio, building an automotive empire, and even changing the course of the San Antonio River for the 1968 Hemisfair, Red McCombs was a self-made businessman and fiercely proud Texan.

Red McCombs founded Red McCombs Automotive, co-founded Clear Channel Communications, and brought the SPURS to San Antonio. He has owned more than 400 businesses in his career, served on the Hemisfair Executive Committee that built the Tower of the Americas and, along with the SPURS, owned the Denver Nuggets and the Minnesota Vikings.

Working side by side, Red and Charline McCombs supported Texas families, schools, research institutions, and non-profits. Their names remain atop dozens of civic and educational buildings across the state, including: The McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin and the McCombs Institute for the Early Detection and treatment of Cancer at MD Anderson in Houston.
